Towards the end of the 20th century, a new phase in the history of Santa María Cathedral began. In 1994, the structure of the Cathedral was once again showing signs of instability. This initiated a process of study and analysis which culminated in the Master Plan for the Integral Restoration of Santa María Cathedral. This Master Plan highlighted the need for the restoration of the monument to follow two lines of development: on the one hand, the physical aspect of the monument, and on the other, its outward relationship with the urban, social and cultural setting.
The Santa María Cathedral Foundation was created at the end of 1999 in order to manage this project. The Foundation has since carried out a multitude of actions to achieve its aims. This website is an example of one such action, and here the visitor can find out about the 21st century restoration of Vitoria-Gasteiz's Santa María Cathedral.
