The Foundation was registered by the Basque Government as a cultural foundation at the end of 1999. Its generic aims and objectives are to facilitate the consolidation, restoration and integral rehabilitation of Santa María Cathedral in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and of its urban surroundings, developing the guidelines of the Master Plan that was written to this end.
The Santa María Cathedral Foundation has 25 million euros available to carry out this work between the year 2000 and 2012. Most of these resources have been provided by the institutions that make up the governing Board; The Regional Government of Alava, the President of which is also the President of the Foundation Board, Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council and the Bishopric of Vitoria.
On the other hand, the Spanish Ministry of Public Works has recognised the quality of the Master Plan and awarded it one of the largest contributions for cathedral restoration. The Basque Government contributes also, supporting activities that enhance its value. For its part, the local bank Caja Vital Kutxa sponsors the entire Programme of Guided Tours "Open for Works", while the Agency for Integral Rehabilitation of the Historical Centre of Vitoria-Gasteiz finances the guided tours of the city walls and contributes to the cultural activities that the Foundation organises.
The Santa María Cathedral Foundation features three operational levels: Management and Technical Directorate, Legal and Administrative Area and Management and Diffusion of Knowledge
